After months of speculation and rumour, Goalie Pete has officially confirmed the devasatating news that he has retired from the Waves.
Pete released a statement today saying, "I’m sorry but my body has let me down. With the orthopedic bills and work commitments I regret that I can’t play. It’s been great. ( I will be available for irregular emergencies when you can’t field a keeper. So phone at those times!!!)"
Club official TH10 said Pete was an outstanding servant of the club who was coming off his best season so far, and certainly his busiest.
"We'll miss Pete's dry humour, his crusty old motorcycle pants and his amazing record in penalty situations," TH10 said.
"He kept us in the game many times with his shot stopping ability and soaked up pressure and, at times, withering abuse, with great humour. We shouldn't forget that Pete's decision will also leave a hole on the hill, assuming Jo decides not to come and watch any more. Although not one of the biggest drinkers or loudest voices in the Wine Hogs ranks she made up for it with her unfailingly kind support."
Pete came on board from day one of the Coastal Hogs and moved with the group to Coledale. He was a striker turned keeper and was one of the most reliable members of the team.
"Ï think the only time he let us down was against Old Boys a couple of seasons back when he saved the 'wrong'penalty,"said TH10. Pete saved an opponents spot kick, one of his many such interventions, only for the ref to order it retaken because he failed to blow the whistle.
"I know Pete isn't a fan of the blog but I'm sure the rest of the club would like to join me in wishing Pete the best in his playing retirement," said TH10.
