The marOOn mOAn

How would you normally pronounce the word 'maroon', meaning a dark-red colour?

1/ with the last syllable rhyming with 'moan'.
2/ with the last syllable rhyming with 'moon'.

If the local hoans aren't making too much noise outside, try to listen to the commentary of a Man Utd game (whilst eating some Coan cheese). The game kicks off at noan. Soan enough, those that go with 'moan' might expect to hear the commentator say "Wayne Roany bursts through, the goal is at his mercy. Oh nooo he's balloaned the ball that high that its not only sailed over the bar, its got within touching distance of the Moan".

or perhaps not...

Now in Wayne Rooneys case, a "Moan" is probably quite appropriate, but do any other words with double 'O' get pronounced as 'OA'?

A quick check of dictionary.com

shows pronunciation is muh-roon

Kel Richards on ABC's word watch makes an intriguing yet pathetic attempt to beg for leniency. Claiming that the word may have originated from the French word 'marron' - and I'd be quite happy to blame the French for Australians mis-pronouncing the word. However, being French, marron should obviously be pronounced moron

http://www.abc.net.au/newsradio/txt/s1935054.htm

"Presented by Kel Richards

It’s State of Origin time once again – and once again a NewsRadio listener has asked me about the pronunciation of the word “maroon.” Many Australians pronounce it marOAN – others it’s marOON they say...

...so perhaps some leniency should be allowed...

... And almost all dictionaries say it’s marOON to rhyme with “moon”. Perhaps some leniency should be allowed. Australian English does have regional accents, so perhaps we can allow both marOON and marOAN. Because it seems that how you say it might depend on where you were born. And here’s a thought based on the origin of the word. It appears to come from the French marron – which, it appears, is a particular type of southern European chestnut, and which is, supposedly, a brownish-crimson or claret colour, hence the English word. At a guess I’d say that the marOAN pronunciation is a little closer to the original French word – while in Britain (and elsewhere) the pronunciation has been anglicised, along with the spelling. "

Next week's games

I hope everyone came through the opening weekend unscathed and made the most of the warm day to soak their tired muscles in the cool ocean yesterday. Thankyou to everyone for chipping in and making it a memorable start for our seniors at Coledale.

This week some of us will be away from Wednesday training on a fact finding mission in Sydney but training will still go ahead - perhaps a 6pm start would allow people to get away and watch the Socceroos game on TV. The Maroons look to have 18 available at the moment so have a think and let me know if you'd like the option of the week off if it stays at 18. Otherwise we will roster off players who have not yet put themselves on the When I'm Away list for at least week. Those who missed game one, whether through injury or stuffing up the time, will also have preference :-)

I'll post other results from the round as they come in and Kev will fashion up a table for later in the week.

Looking forward to this weekend, the Maroons face Uni Gangrenes at 3pm at their third home venue in as many years. This time around they are paired at Corrimal. For the address and map click here.

The Whites travel to Keith Bond Oval at Oak Flats to play a new team this season in Shellharbour City at 3pm. For the address and directions click here.

Thanks to Figree FC for their maps.

Who was your man of the match?

Don't forget to visit the 3-2-1 in stats centre. Feel free to vote on both games, if you watched them. The 3-2-1 votes are tallied and used to decide the respective players of the year at the end of the season.

PS: In cleaning up the rooms yesterday I found a stray Maroon sock. I'll bring it to next week's game at Uni.

Won one drew one

Coledale Waves seniors took their baby steps Saturday with a win for the Maroons and a draw for the Whites.
The Maroons kicked off the seniors club first ever match and were a goal behind within two minutes as the ball flicked up off Jon S, Goalie Pete was unable to clear and it bounced in off the opposition forward.
That was about as good as it got for the IFS visitors and the Maroons were dominant throughout.
Ant Ritter scored a similar goal in response, after Shaky's header from GD's corner and the teams went in level at the break.
The Maroons dominance continued in the second half with several close shaves before Graeme P
surged into the box, fell theatrically under a a clumsy challenge and Fergus despatched the resultant penalty.
The Maroons stuck around for a BBQ and to cheer on the whites in their match against the Burgh's Sweat Hogs and celebrated two early goals through Stevie B and Stevie H.
The Hogs were down to 10 men and battled back to level terms.
The Whites hit the lead with a quarter hour to play with Stevie B's second and could have put the game to bed before the Burgh came back with a late equaliser.
Overall it was an excellent day - great support, strong play and two decent results to kick us off as a senior club.

Deadline day deals

WOMBARRA, March 26 (THNS) - Coledale Waves seniors today announced they had signed two players on the IAFA's preseason deadline day, allowing them to feature in the opening round this weekend.
Central defender Les C completed his move from Dunbar Rovers to the Whites and midfield powerhouse Paul E put pen to paper in a dramatic last minute signing from the Thirroul Sunday team.
Paul completed his paper work in the car on the way to the IAFA offices on Wednesday, just hours before the transfer dealine closed for week one.
Although intending to sit out the first match, Paul , who met his new teammates on Wednesday night, has been called up following injuries to Shanus (knee) and Tom (hamstring). TH10 remains on the injured list with a calf muscle but hopes to return soon.
The Whites suffered two injuries against Gibson Park Rangers and Les will debut against Helensburgh.
"We welcome both players to the club and hope they have long and fruitful careers," said club president TH10. "The intitial feeling was that we would go with 20 players each squad but already injuries and absences have hit us. With 22 games, regardless of washouts, plus finals, we expect there will be plenty of football to go around."

How to .... cook a snag

Sure, we all like to tell everyone we know how to run a BBQ but there will be the odd Wave out there feeling a little heat rising as they survey the rosters.
Here are a few handy hints.
1. Cooking snags is not as easy as it looks. We are going for low temperature cooking. If your plate is too hot you will end up with a lump of charcoal.
2. Don't be a prick - keep your fork or barbie mate prongs off my meat. Yes, there is a school of thought that you should prick snags to let the fat out. There is also a school of thought (is there such a thing as a school of one?) that Graeme Phillipson could play up front. Inside the casing is where the fat belongs - this is what makes your snag sanger taste so damn good.
3. Keep turning the suckers. This is especially true if you've messed up point one and have your hotplate too high.
4. Cook more than you think you need because they will all get eaten, even if it's by Gary J's dog.
5. Start earlier than you think. The worst thing you can hear is someone pestering you "are they ready yet?" While I prefer not to give customers undercooked salmonella laden pig gristle I make an exception for anyone who says "are they ready yet?" three times. They get the rawest one I've got.
6. Keep your cool. Remember no matter how hot it gets it will be someone else's turn to do it next time while you kick back and enjoy the rewards.
7. Never use a mobile phone while cooking a BBQ. You run the risk of a: turning the snags with your phone and then having to clean the grease out of your keypad. Or b: pressing your red hot Barbie mate to your precious ear hole.
Do you have any more tips to add to this?

How to .... run a line

Some of you will be doing your first line duty this season. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind.

1. The ball is out when the whole of the ball crosses the whole of the line.

2. If you see a handball or foul you should flag wildly to the ref. Those guys are often blind and will have missed the infringement, but are usually able to hear a flapping flag.

3. Hard as it is to face lining a 3pm game (having played at 1pm) without a beer in hand, it is against the laws of the comp. Perhaps pour it into a sports drink bottle first.

4. Try keep up with play. It makes offside calls easier but also allows you to see if the ball has crossed the goallines.

5. Defenders, like suffers of Tourette's, will spit out "offside" at you all afternoon. It is therefore handy to know the rules. Offside is straightforward but not.
A player is offside if they have fewer than two opponents between them and the opposition goal when the ball is passed and they subsequently touch the ball or interfere with an opponent.

Have a look at the following explanation by the boss of the English referees, Keith Hackett.

"The law really is simple and well defined. First and foremost, it is important to know the key principle: it is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position. Assistants will not flag the moment someone strays offside. A player is only penalised if he then becomes active.
The source of most confusion is clearly in the definition of 'active'.

To be clear, the definition, in the laws, is this: in deciding whether to flag, assistants must watch out for three things, any one of which would make an offside player active.
First, is the offside player interfering with play? That means playing or touching the ball. Attempting to play the ball does not count - he must actually play or touch it.

Second, is the player interfering with an opponent's ability to play the ball, by clearly obstructing the opponent's line of vision or movements, or by making a gesture or movement which, in the opinion of the referee, deceives or distracts an opponent?

And third, is the player 'gaining an advantage'? This last point is specific. It applies only to an offside player playing a ball that rebounds to him from an opponent, the post or the crossbar. If he does not play the ball from the rebound, then he is not penalised for being in that offside position. Nothing else counts as 'gaining'.

And that's it. If a player ticks any one of those three boxes, he is offside. The three-part definition is remembered as 'PIG' - if a player doesn't Play, Interfere or Gain, he is fine."

Maroons dressed for success

The Maroon playing shirts, as proudly worn by our XL model (left), rolled up to my door today. Still no news on the white kit so I'm thinking it could be a week or two before we get them. It's essential you return the white shirt from the trial if you have one at home.

Training on Wednesday will involve a warmup, some work in our own groups and then an 11-a-side match - subs will be interchanged as per a game.

Rosters for linesman and BBQ start this week. They will get a permanent home with their own Stats Centre entry soon. This week's on-roster folk will appear in breaking news soon. It is your responsibility to organise a change and alert me if you have something preventing you from doing your duties.

Why the Pink? The rooball goalposts and the backs of our goals have been painted pink. We will also be using pink matchballs this season. This is to honour Coledale soccer mum and marathoner Kerryn McCann, who died of breast cancer last year. A sign will be going up on the fence explaining this so we don't tire of telling the opposition. The club will be fund raising for the Jane McGrath Foundation this season and the seniors committee will discuss how it might contribute when we next meet. If you wish to do your own personal tribute years of experience teaches me that washing your white shorts, socks or shirt with something bright red and new will probably do the trick.

Good on yer to those who have marked their absences on the When I'm Away boards. It appears that the Maroons are at 16 this week with TH10, Deano, Peter L and Tommy missing the game. If you aren't one of these and won't be there let me know please. A Maroons match preview and a Whites headcount will followo later in the week.

Thanks to Shanus for organising the cleanup on Saturday. The dressingrooms came up a treat and the lines are miraculously unwobbly. Shane maintains the lines during the season. If you have time off during the day please volunteer to help him out.

Shirts please

Hi guys
Canterbury appear to have bollocksed up our order and there will be a delay on the white team shirts for at least one game, possibly two or more. They were meant to arrive today but I have been told that there's been an unforseen problem which they don't care to elaborate on. Meanwhile the Maroon shirts were due also today. These were apparently despatched from their factory on Sunday but are now missing.
Assuming they work this out in time, the Maroons wil have a kit for week one. The Whites will likely need to wear the white kit we used in the first trial.
These were borrowed and should have been returned washed already. I think I have about six. Spies tell me that a certain Irish gentleman was using his as a training shirt on Wednesday night. PLEASE RETURN THEM WASHED TO TRAINING ON WEDNESDAY
I know it's not the best scenario - I made our disappointment clear but it's like p*ssing into the wind with these guys.

Trial on Wednesday

Hi All,

Please note the following for Wednesday's trial match against Thirroul Masters 1.

Venue - Jim Allen Oval Wombarra

Time - from 6.30pm

Maroons

  • Playing 1st half for 45 minutes @ 6.30 (please try to get there anytime after 6.00pm so that you're ready to go for 6.30 kickoff)
  • When the 2nd half is on people can stay around for a few drills, they can stay and watch the Whites go around, or they can have an early night (if you end up at the pub then I'm happy to edit the post to say we have a team meeting at Scarborough Bowlo, just tell me what time we finished up . . .)

Whites
  • Playing 2nd half for 45 minutes, starting @ 7.20 (est)
  • Please still get there for 6.30 as whilst the Maroons play the 1st half, AB12 will have the Whites doing some warmups at the southern end of the ground, they'll have a chat about the season ahead, and also they'll do some practise drills

Can people please post here if you can't make it this Wednesday night so we can work out positions etc with what players we have available. If we're requiring players to help fill positions for whites or maroons, I'll post around Wednesday lunchtime asking for volunteers

War and Peace

There are quite a few things to get through today.

Trial: We are looking to play Thirroul Masters 1 team Gibson Park Rangers in a trial on Wednesday night at Gibson Park Thirroul from 6.30pm. The preferred plan is for one of our teams to play the first half while the other does some drills etc and vice versa for the second half. AB and Ant will organise the two sides. Check back here Tuesday for confirmation of the game, otherwise we'll be training at Wombarra.

Team split: It has been mutually agreed that it's now time to separate the teams for training and game preparation purposes. Obviously we have a committee to handle club-wide matters and will continue to do that. AB12 will now take over the organisation of the whites. The idea is that we will train separately from here in, while we still have strong numbers at training, but might come together at the end of training for a game against each other.
Both teams need to help their managers by using this blog. The most important interactive feature is the When I'm Away link in Stats Centre below right. We can only have 16 players per team on a Saturday and have 20 in the squad so sometimes a decision needs to be made on who sits out. By using the WIA section you make it easier to track who is in or out.
On Thursday or Fri each week both teams will post game previews on the blog with the expected lineups. If you are a late withdrawal go there (to comment) to let your team manager know you will be missing out.

Awards night voting: Another feature of the blog is the ability to cast 3-2-1 votes for the best three players in each game you play. These links have now been added in Stats Centre. After your game you go there and follow the steps. These tallies are blind and we have a Brownlow style awards night at the end of the season (see post below this one).

Jobs: Please remember we have a cleanup at the home ground at 9am on Saturday to get our dressingrooms ready for the season. Beyond that your team managers AB (white) and John B (Maroon) will need to work up a roster for linesmen for our home games, starting in week one. People with other jobs such as committee, IAFA delegates (deano, this week 7pm at Corrimal Leagues) are off the lines roster. They will however be on a BBQ roster of all our players being composed by Ant. On occasion we might have to ref the other team as well - if anyone wants to put their hand up I can help them get trained and they can avoid the lines roster as well.

Social Calendar 2009

The start of the season is fast approaching and The Committee has already been burning the midnight oil......well 5 minutes on Tony's balcony, to discuss fund raising social events for the season. We need to pay for the lights we use during training and raise funds for the club. The following events will take place during the season, with dates to follow very shortly.
  1. Sunday Bowling Comp - this will probably take place during April and will include the League team who will share the cost of the lighting, individual bowling teams will be charged a small fee to participate with competitively priced BBQ to help keep the engines stoked. This is a family event, wife's & kids more than welcome.......ladies should be encouraged to form their own teams or even mixed teams.
  2. Trivia Night - this will take place probably round 9 (late May or early June) and will be held at the bowling club, further details to follow.
  3. End of Season Awards Night - further details will follow as the season progresses, lets see if we can improve on last seasons fantastic event.

The Committee will supply beer for purchase (all proceeds going to the club) after all the home games and for the away games we want all players to attend the bowlo for beer & banter!

The World Cup qualifiers will be screened at the bowlo.

Further information will be posted once The Committee can be bothered!

Two from two

It's early days of course but the signs were encouraging as both Coledale teams won their first friendlies at Unanderra on Saturday.
The mighty whiteys came from 1-0 down to topple Albion Park 2-1. Dave F, despite giving away a penalty on the stroke of halftime, had a huge match in the centre of defence. Doug Noodles Hamill scored a belter to equalise and a deserved winner came from Gary Hardie in a brief cameo near the end.
Fungus R scored twice for the Maroons in a 3-0 win over Unanderra's 3rd division outfit. The first was a penalty after Dave C's cross set up Jon S in the box, only for him to be felled from behind.
Dean J, who toiled manfully as a lone striker in rotation with Gary J, hit the post in the second half. Gary J added a deserved second when he chipped the keeper from just inside the box with a deft finish. Fungus might have scored a bucket load but was content with two, rounding off an excellent move which carved Unanderra up down the left and saw Mark "Shaky" D provide the assist his outstanding play had threatened all afternoon.
We have decided to withdraw from next week's friendly through lack of numbers but are looking at a Wednesday night session friendly soon. Details to follow.

View from the hill

By Gary Twinkletoes Jordan
As our training has progressed for the coming season so has the make up of our new O35s team playing out of Coledale. Team ?
The historical Coastal Hogs start the competition this year renamed the Coledale Waves and our growth away from Helensburgh has manifested itself in an interesting way. We also see the birth of a new over 35s side running around Masters 2. Our new team may appear raw but for those who haven't noticed, this morphed collection of old boys are looking very sharp.
The enthusiasm by which the white waves have begun pre-season training augers well for the approaching winter. This column is looking forward to again seeing all our maroons on the park strutting their experienced stuff. And by strut we don't mean dancing.
That is unless of course you can dance with a ball balancing on the end of one foot. Or juggle it around various parts of the body keeping it well clear of the ground. Dance all you like if you can drill that bladder between the sticks from 25 metres following a pirouette and shimmy.
It has been an interesting time for the waves observing recent efforts on the playing pitch. The maroons are certainly suffering from niggling injuries and players unable to make training. The whites too have had to deal with injury. Sunday mornings through-out summer has certainly sharpened the skills of some but equally produced doubts in others. Time to get serious.
We wear our colours for the first time this Saturday so it's best we appear to the outside world as if we possess a sound knowledge of why we're there. During the season always remember our brother team. We won't play away together again this year. Get to the ground early and try staying late. Home teams generally provide the linesman however only one of our opponents is at home. If by good fortune your not needed to officiate then you can offer support from the sidelines. Ever more vocal if you have a cold one in hand.
The chilled ale comes in handy more than you may imagine. The ice bricks used to maintain the minimum temperature of your after game refreshment is extremely useful for those minor injuries sustained during said game.
Good luck to all this coming weekend. Remember to stop goals as well as trying to score them. Did that sound like a coach, defender, or midfielder? Forget the forwards as they have no idea how to stop a goal. Right Pete?

No turning back

Hey ho

Just a note to let you know we are officially paid up and the rego forms and mugshots are all handed in. Thanks to everyone for helping make the rego a painless process and we can now get on with the business of having a bit of fun and winning some football matches.

An updated draw will be sent out later this week and will then appear in the Stats Centre. There will be one or two changes so if you've planned anything around the draw you may wish to reassess. The games on May 16 listed as being at Cawley Park will actually be at home.

And please note that games will be played on Anzac Day, April 25 - the Whites are off to Port Kembla and the Maroons return to the Burgh.

If you can't make the trials, let us know

Hi all
These are the squads we are looking at for this weekend. Please email me or comment on the blog asap if you are listed here but can’t make your game and we can do a shuffle. We will have at least two Maroons there early to help out the whites and might require a couple of whites to hang back for the Maroons. Ian D, you’re welcome to come have a ref if you want (you think we swear a lot, wait til you hear the Cows).

Watch the blog for updates. Also, please support the clean up on March 21. The aim is to clear out the changing shed so we have a home and away dressingoom we can use at the ground. Go on the post below this and let FM9 know that you are coming.

The venue for Saturday's matches is Central Road Unanderra, opposite the Wests Illawarra leagues club.
