It's early days of course but the signs were encouraging as both Coledale teams won their first friendlies at Unanderra on Saturday.
The mighty whiteys came from 1-0 down to topple Albion Park 2-1. Dave F, despite giving away a penalty on the stroke of halftime, had a huge match in the centre of defence. Doug Noodles Hamill scored a belter to equalise and a deserved winner came from Gary Hardie in a brief cameo near the end.
Fungus R scored twice for the Maroons in a 3-0 win over Unanderra's 3rd division outfit. The first was a penalty after Dave C's cross set up Jon S in the box, only for him to be felled from behind.
Dean J, who toiled manfully as a lone striker in rotation with Gary J, hit the post in the second half. Gary J added a deserved second when he chipped the keeper from just inside the box with a deft finish. Fungus might have scored a bucket load but was content with two, rounding off an excellent move which carved Unanderra up down the left and saw Mark "Shaky" D provide the assist his outstanding play had threatened all afternoon.
We have decided to withdraw from next week's friendly through lack of numbers but are looking at a Wednesday night session friendly soon. Details to follow.

Well done lads, jolly good start. Wish I could have been there, but a great description by TH10 made it real.
ReplyDeleteGoalie Glenn informed me that the Maroons were a well formed unit, knowing each others game intimately but ran out of puff after just 10 minutes!
He also informed me that the mighty whites kept a tight poker hand, not revealing our strategic approach, but also ran out of steam after 10 minutes.
I am sure that the Whites will get to know each other's game shortly and will present a formidable foe to the league. Sounds like we all need to do a bit of extra jogging or cycling to get into shape.
gary the hitman hardie scored???? wow!
ReplyDeleteAfter training on wednesday, it was obvious that the whites did not perform to the best of their ability. You are a skillful team, but the difference is that the we Maroons know each others game, and can anticipate the flowing moves.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest that you white boys get together after training next Wednesday for a quick ale at the local, and talk strategy, favourite positions and have a "get to know each other" beer.
I would also suggest that you have a think during the practise session about trying a few variations of movements. It will give you something to reflect on at the pub.
Looks like the sort of thing a team cuts out and puts on the dressingroom wall when they are going to face that particular opponent..
ReplyDeleteMaroons and flowing movements in the 1 sentence . . . huh?
ReplyDeleteAnd whilst we're on the subject, why didn't we make the finals last year? Did we end up resolving it - was it the defenders letting too many goals in or was it the strikers not scoring enough goals?
For the record, I reckon this Anonymous character is a 'white' in disguise trying to fire up the 2 teams . . . bring on the derby. At least give us your name Anonymous one
Sounds like an ad for speed dating. "talk ...., favourite positions...get to know each other..." Who wrote this?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think it is a great idea; to talk about teamwork etc, to talk about Liverpool winning the Champions League again, or to simply have a beer after training! Who knows, a few too many beers and someone may suggest a Liverpool v Bayern Munich final!
